Day 9 Hello Haiti

This morning we rolled in early to the island destination of Haiti. We had two tours booked today, so we had to rise at the very unrespectable hour of 7:30am....not good! We knew it was going to be a big day, so we didn't want to skip breakfast, hence the decision to rise mega early.

Getting off the ship was very easy, as the port of Labadee was very well organised and had lots to do. The only thing about it, was that this actual area is owned by the cruise company, so it had a bit of a staged feel. Never-the-less, the first sea kayaking activity was fun and in an exceptionally picturesque setting. It lasted a couple of hours and at the half way mark, we pulled into the local area to see the wares of the local villagers. Not our style, but we did feel bad about not buying anything, but we aren't keen on junk.

Along the way we learnt about the geographical location of the island within the Caribbean area and learnt that two thirds of this island is actually the Dominican Republic. Almost another country, damn so, so close! The Haitians are predominately French and Spanish speaking, but they mainly need their English to adequately survive this thriving tourism industry. The cruise ships that come in have actually encouraged many Haitians to move into this port area to have more opportunities for jobs and work.

As the ship was so close we decided to head in for lunch and a rest before our afternoon of jet skiing. This was awesome! We were able to hammer along and lots of times we seemed to get a bit of air. Luckily there is no room in our garage for a new toy! It was a pretty pricey activity initially, but given it went for at least a full solid hour of riding our own skis, it was well worth it!

Tonight it was a casual theme. We freshened up after coming back from a big day out and fell asleep whilst attempting to blog. Oops we woke too late to get to our Chicargo booking. A few staff have mentioned that it's a little too long anyway, so apparently it wasn't diabolical that we missed it. After finally getting our act together it was off for another delicious dinner.

Next we headed to the casino to turn our even stephens into winning. Unfortunately we had the worst luck of all time and not one of our spins came up! It was a touch demoraling, but we are never under any illusions of ever wining. The Love and Marriage game show was on in the theatre and we managed to catch the end of it, which was actually pretty funny.

The casino was NOT going to beat us! When we went back for the evening's second appearance, that's exactly what happened! Damn you casino, lol!!! It was way more fun the second time around, as we sat there for ages with some luck actually on our side, even if momentarily! After that we decided to cut our losses and hit the hay.

If you're reading this blog, you would've noticed that there have been a heap loaded up at the same time. This is because we are too tight to pay the $50 daily special rate or $180 for the week for Internet. It is crazy expensive. Ok till next time, adios amegoes.
